Position: Environmental, Social, Governance Analyst/Associate

Position Overview

As an ESG analyst, you will work with  a sustainability database in conjunction with our portfolio companies to  research, collect, aggregate data, and report on ESG functions and impact  within Unovis.

In collaboration with our ESG Policy  Director and team, you will manage our ESG function, with an emphasis on  research, relationship-building, data collecting and synthesizing.

As a small and growing asset  management firm, we have the expectation that you will be willing and able to  perform any tasks reasonably related to the below duties, as required from  time to time.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Learn the user-friendly, database platform (measuring land/water use, carbon  emissions and more), to provide an ESG report of each portfolio company.
  • Work with the team, portfolio companies and ESG Policy Director to ensure Unovis’  policies, procedures and templates stay up-to-date and implemented. This  involves identifying, managing, and monitoring ESG issues and creating action  plans.
  • Assist in providing guidance to deal teams on both investment-specific and  sector-wide risks during the due diligence phase to ensure each investment  proposals meets Unovis’ policies and procedures.
  • Use reports and other available information to produce guidance documents to our portfolio  companies and investment teams on identifying and mitigating ESG risks.
  • Ensure all guidance documents and lessons learnt are shared through the organization  on a regular basis, with ongoing training.
  • Undertake thematic reviews across countries to share sector-specific lessons and practices.
  • The ESG Analyst will report to the Managing Partners in association with the ESG  Policy Director, with additional support from the wider team.

Required:

  • A deep interest in ESG initiatives, especially regarding the impact of animal agriculture.
  • A  general understanding of the UN Sustainability Goals and other global initiatives and progressive  policies.
  • Agriculture and supply chain understanding and awareness of our global ESG hurdles,  including the welfare of animals.
  • Enjoy working with people and adept at building friendly relationships and  credibility (e.g., with portfolio company contacts).
  • Solid writing skills.
  • Good communications skills with fluency in English.
  • Willingness to work in office space (post-Covid) as well as remotely.
  • Have fulfilled any obligations imposed on you by the laws concerning military  service in your country.

 

Beneficial but not mandatory:

  • Background (2+ years) in global sustainability issues, ideally in the agribusiness  sector.
  • Experience working in ESG functions of a food-related or impact investment firm.
  • Technical experience and/or an appreciation of conducting ESG reviews (such as  Environmental Investigation Agency, Social Impact Assessment, Environmental  & Social Impact Assessment), due diligence assessments, monitoring and  reporting in alignment with the Industry Foundation Classes Performance  Standards.
  • International work experience in broader Europe and multilingual skills.

Position: Finance Manager / Finance Director
Location: Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands

Position Overview

We are looking for a finance head fluent in Dutch and English to report to the Managing Partners. This Critical Hire will have all the necessary resources and team support to immediately build out scalable systems and middle / back-office operations.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversee reporting, legal and compliance functions with regulatory bodies in Europe and the Netherlands such as AIFM and AFM.
  • Interface with U.S. Controller and Fund Advisor to assure U.S Legal, Tax and SEC compliance.
  • Manage oversight of third-party administrators and middle/back-office service providers, who are responsible for the reporting of position valuations and performance, reconciliation of cash and the calculation of month-end and quarter-end net assets
  • Along with our fund administration firm, review and oversee all capital calls, distributions, management fee calculations, and allocations.
  • Review variance analysis, trial balance, profit and loss, forecasts, budgets, and financial models.
  • Monitor reporting of financial and other information from each Fund investment.
  • Run the quarterly and annual valuation process by coordinating with the investment team for direct investment valuations prepared in-house as well as with the administrator for fund investments.
  • Report to Board of Directors with focus on Fund Accounting & Finance Teams performance, along with being a key decision maker on fund investments.
  • Interface with U.S. Controller and Fund Advisor to assure U.S. compliance.
  • Manage the fund audit process.
  • Maintain and manage debt facility/line of credit, including borrowings, repayments,
  • pre-funding, interest calculation, any reporting to lenders, liquidity analysis, management reporting.
  • Develop and maintain efficient internal controls and business processes.
  • Assist in writing standard operating procedures, recommend and implement operational enhancements, and maintain compliance with operational policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the planning of new funds and product types to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Review processes and look to improve efficiency where possible.

 

Required:

  • Expertise in the investment management industry such as private equity, hedge fund or venture capital company experience.
  • Track record as Controller and / or Finance Manager with a record of progressive career development.
  • Prior Big 4 experience and CPA license is appreciated.
  • Solid experience in accounting, administration, and financial reporting for investment funds.
  • Solid communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, and ability to build, as well as deliver, effective presentations.
  • Process-oriented, yet comfortable working in a changing and dynamic environment.
  • Self-starter who can operate in a fast-paced environment and can work independently and responsibly with limited supervision.
  • Focused attention to detail and follow tasks through to completion.

Position: Investment Analyst/Senior Investment Analyst
Location: Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands

Position Overview

As the Investment Analyst, you will be responsible for supporting and heading critical elements of the investment evaluation process for the fund, including assessment of potential new investment opportunities, analysis for follow-on financings, and exit transactions for current portfolio companies. Central to the position is an enthusiasm and ability to contribute creative ideas to support innovative companies pursuing positive social and environmental outcomes. Your responsibilities will include supporting the development of an investment case from market and competitive analysis through detailed financial modeling of growth potential and performance for entrepreneurial companies with revenues ranging from ~$1M to >$20M. Working as a core part of the investment team, you will be involved in enabling and supporting the Unovis team to advance the impact investing marketplace.

Responsibilities Include

Assessment and due diligence of both new and follow-on investment opportunities:

  • Identify and evaluate potential new investments for Unovis in a wide variety of sectors with the capability to produce triple bottom line returns
  • Track and manage pipeline of new potential investments
  • Conduct due diligence on potential investment opportunities
  • Develop financial models, projections, and business plans to enable and support investment decision-making
  • Perform market research and competitive analysis
  • Implement a range of valuation techniques to prepare financial and valuation models to help make investment assessments.

 Support existing portfolio company growth and exit:

  • Work alongside Unovis investment professionals with a focus on analytical assessments including pricing evaluation, competitive positioning, ROI for new marketing or product development initiatives, Cost of Goods Sold analysis, and supply chain efficiency
  • Support portfolio company follow-on fundraising or strategic partnership development by producing investor presentations and reviewing business and strategic plans
  • Support the team on quarterly financial assessment of portfolio companies through analysis of key financial and business metrics

Experience and Characteristics of the Ideal Candidate:

  • Systematic, creative problem solver with quantitative background
  • 3+years of relevant experience in investment banking, strategic corporate development (M&A), venture capital, private equity investing or management consulting
  • Experience in entrepreneurial environments and the flexibility to work in both highly structured corporate settings and less structured start‐up environments
  • Deep commitment to social and environmental change through business and innovation
  • Collaborative thinker who works well in teams and is also a self‐starter
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Financial accreditation appreciated (CPA, CFA, etc.)  
  • Proficient written communication skills
  • Preference for international work experience in broader Europe with multilingual skills, particularly Dutch, a distinct plus. (English fluency is required.)
  • Food-related industry or impact investment experience preferred (not required)
