Plant-Based Seafood Brand Good Catch Debuts First Frozen Line. Good Catch is swimming into deeper waters this week with the launch of its first frozen plant-based seafood offerings, more than a year after the brand waded into retail with shelf-stable vegan tuna products. The new line has been in the works for a while but, in addition to creating the recipes, production of the first frozen products required a new facility and more equipment, CEO and co-founder Chris Kerr said.

California tech start-up plans to launch cell-based seafood in 2021.  San Diego, CA-based food technology start-up BlueNalu plans to release its first cell-based seafood product to the public in the second half of 2021. BlueNalu has signed a lease on a 38,000-square-foot facility, a six-fold increase over the current BlueNalu space, to make its vision a reality.

New Crop Capital Leads Convertible Note Round in Heura – the Fastest Growing Vegan Meat Startup in Europe. New Crop Capital has invested in Foods for Tomorrow, producer of plantbased chicken Heura as well as other products including the Heura Burger. The Barcelona startup recently announced to vegconomist that it is the fastest-growing European startup in the plant-based meat industry with a 450% growth in the last year.

Dao Foods & New Crop Capital Announce New China Plant-Based Incubator. Partnering with New Crop Capital, an early investor of Silicon Valley food tech Beyond Meat and over 30 other leading food techs globally, Dao Foods has launched a new incubator targeting plant-based startups and entrepreneurs. The partnership hopes to disrupt the existing food system – namely unsustainable animal agriculture – by helping to introduce less resource-intensive and carbon-friendly alternative proteins to China.

Beyond Meat of seafood, Good Catch, hooks tuna giant. Bumble Bee Foods is hooked on plant-based seafood. The tuna maker announced Monday a joint distribution venture with vegan food company Good Catch, a Beyond Meat of sorts for fish, which makes seafood using legumes, beans and algae that has a similar texture to real tuna sans animal products and without the pungent odor. Bumble Bee is one of the first major seafood companies in the country to partner with a plant-based brand.

Portfolio Company BlueNalu Nets $20M Series A to Accelerate Development of Cell-based Seafood. BlueNalu, the startup focused on creating seafood directly from fish cells, announces that it has closed a $20 million in Series A funding. The round was co-led by Stray Dog Capital, CPT Capital, Clear Current Capital, and New Crop Capital.

Wall Street takes notice of plant-based food trend. The public's appetite for beef, pork and seafood alternatives to real meat is making Wall Street take notice. Now bankers are jumping on the vegan bandwagon. New Crop Capital's plant-based seafood alternative, Good Catch, which has a New York office, and local venture firm VegInvest, which funds startups that "strive to replace the use of animals," are pouring venture capital into this area, hoping to get in on the $5 billion-and-growing plant-based protein market.

Gathered Foods, makers of Good Catch® plant-based seafood products, today announced the closing of an oversubscribed Series B funding round, which includes two key strategic industry investors: Greenleaf Foods and 301 INC, the venture arm of General Mills. Led by Stray Dog Capital and Rocana Ventures and including several prominent impact investors such as Almanac Investments, CPT Capital and New Crop Capital, the net proceeds from the investment, totaling over $32 million, will be used for significant expansion in distribution across North America, Europe and into Asia, the opening of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, and new product and food service channel launches in early 2020.
